Biography


The German mezzo-soprano, Stefanie Irányi, grew up in the Chiemgau area of Bavaria. She studied at
the University Music School (Musikhochschule) in Munich and was a prize-winner of many music
competitions, including the International Robert Schumann Competition in Zwickau and the National
Song Competition in Berlin.

In 2006, during her studies, she had a successful debut at the opera house in Turin, Italy, in a
new production of Giancarlo Menotti’s “The Consul”. This was followed by engagements in leading
Italian and European opera houses and concert stages.

She has performed with conductors Asher Fisch, Jakob Hrusa, Thomas Herrewege., Thomas Hengelbrock,
Manfred Honeck, Zubin Mehta, Kent Nagano, Simon Rattle amongst others.

This season Stefanie Irányi has made her critically acclaimed debuts in the role of Brangäne in a
new production of Wagner‘s opera Tristan und Isolde at the Bari Opera House. “Splendid voice and
phrasing”, “Solid, precise, deeply immersed in the character” , “Beauty of timbre, abundance of
colors and important volume over the entire range as well as an irresistible stage presence” Were
some of the press reactions to this performance.

She also sang the role of Fricka in Das Rheingold in a concert performance under the baton of Kent
Nagano, and Luciano Berio‘s Folk Songs in the chamber music series of the Bavarian Radio Symphony
Orchestra.

Other highlights included a concert performance of the first act of Wagner‘s Die Walküre with the
Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra and conductor Alexander Liebreich, where she has made her debut in
the role of Sieglinde. She will return to sing this role with the West Australian Symphony
Orchestra in the next season. She will also perform the role of Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier in
Bologna, a Verdi Requiem performance in Basel, Mahler‘s second symphony with the Israel Symphony
Orchestra and Mahler‘s third symphony with the Madrid OSRTVE Orchestra. She is also engaged to sing
in the world premiere of Nicola Campogrande‘s new symphony. The new work will be featured in
concerts in Milan, Rome, Turin, Paris and Warsaw.

The mezzo-soprano has a special love of German art song. Mostly accompanied by Helmut Deutsch, she
has given song recitals at various festivals in Austria and Germany. This coming season they will
perform song recitals at the Art Song Festival in Sindelfingen and at the Brucknerhaus in Linz.

About a performance of Wagner’s “Wesendonck-Lieder”, which are seldom heard in Israel, the
newspaper “Haaretz” wrote:
“…Stefanie Irányi is a wonderful singer. It was pure pleasure to listen to her. Her lovely
sounding voice and her natural musicality give expression to every syllable…”

The artistic output of Stefanie Irányi is documented by CD’s such as a live performance of Das
Rheingold with Simon Rattle and the Bavarian Radio Symphony
Orchestra, a duet-CD with Michael Volle produced by Brillant Classics, and

recordings of Simon Mayr’s operas, including “Ginevra di Scozia, recorded by the Bavarian Radio in
2013. Also in 2013, she recorded Verdi’s “Rigoletto” with Leo Nucci for a DVD produced by the
Festival Verdi Parma. Her first solo CD called “Lamenti” appeared with arias from operas by Hasse,
Haydn and Händel, recorded with the “Hofkapelle Munich”. This recording was highly praised in the

Biografie

Die deutsche Mezzosopranistin Stefanie Irányi wuchs im bayerischen Chiemgau auf. Sie studierte an
der Musikhochschule in München und war Preisträgerin mehrerer Wettbewerbe, gewann beim
Internationalen Robert-Schumann-Wettbewerb in Zwickau und beim Bundeswettbewerb Gesang in
Berlin.
Noch während ihres Studiums debütierte sie erfolgreich am Opernhaus von Turin in einer
Neuinszenierung von Giancarlo Menottis „The Consul“. Es folgten Engagements an den wichtigsten
Opernhäusern in Italien sowie Verpflichtungen an die führenden Konzerthäuser Europas.
Sie arbeitete unter anderem mit Dirigenten wie Asher Fisch, Jakob Hrusa, Thomas Herreweghe und
Thomas Hengelbrock, Manfred Honeck, Alexander Liebreich, Zubin Mehta, Kent Nagano, Simon Rattle,
Jukka Pekka Saraste u.v.a. zusammen.
Mit großem Erfolg debütierte Stefanie Irányi diese Saison als Brangäne in der Neuproduktion von
Tristan und Isolde am Opernhaus in Bari. Von der Presse gepriesen wurde ihre
„…großartige Stimme und Phrasierung”, wie sie “…solide, präzise, tief in die Figur eingetaucht”
singt, aber auch ihre “Schönheit des Timbres, Fülle der Farben und bedeutendes Volumen über den
gesamten Bereich sowie eine unwiderstehliche Bühnenpräsenz”.
Stefanie debütierte ebenfalls als Fricka in Rheingold, in der von der Presse gelobten konzertanten
Aufführung mit Concerto Köln unter der Leitung von Kent Nagano. Große Beachtung fand die
kammermusikalische Aufführung der Berio Folksongs mit dem Symphonieorchester des Bayrischen
Rundfunks.
Weitere musikalische Höhepunkte, wie ein 1. Akt Walküre mit dem Radio Sinfonieorchester Prag in der
Rolle der Sieglinde, ebenso in Perth mit dem WASO, ihr Debut als Rosenkavalier am Teatro Regio di
Bologna, ein Verdi Requiem mit dem Sinfonieorchester Basel und Mahlers
2. Sinfonie mit Israel Symphony Orchestra und Mahler 3. Sinfonie mit dem OSRTVE Madrid folgen.
Zusätzlich eine Uraufführung von Nicola Campogrande mit Stationen in wichtigen Kulturstädten wie
Mailand, Rom, Torino, Paris, Warschau u.v.W.
Eine besondere Liebe verbindet die Mezzosopranistin mit dem Liedgesang. Meist begleitet von Helmut
Deutsch sang sie Liederabende bei verschiedenen Festivals in Österreich und Deutschland. Auch diese
Saison wird Stefanie Irányi beim Liedfestival in Sindelfingen sowie im Brucknerhaus in Linz zu
hören sein.

Über eine Aufführung von Wagners “Wesendonck-Liedern”, die in Israel nur selten zu hören sind,
schrieb die Zeitung “Haaretz”: “…Stefanie Irányi ist eine wunderbare Sängerin. Es war ein reines
Vergnügen, ihr zuzuhören. Ihre lieblich klingende Stimme und ihre natürliche Musikalität verleihen
jeder Silbe Ausdruck…”.

CD-Erscheinungen dokumentieren das künstlerische Schaffen von Stefanie Irányi, wie die
Live-Aufnahme des „Rheingolds“ unter Sir Simon Rattle mit dem Symphonieorchester des Bayrischen

This was followed by engagements at opera houses in Palermo, Turino, Naples, Parma and Venice, where she was heard in operas by Vivaldi, Mozart, Verdi and Wagner.

With her wide range of repertoire, from Baroque through late Romantic periods, she is a welcome guest on international stages such as the Vienna Konzerthaus and Musikverein, the Herkulessaal and Philharmonie in Munich, Suntory Hall in Tokyo and the Paris Théâtre des Champs-Elysées.

Stefanie Irányi has worked together with conductors such as Hansjörg Albrecht, Bruno Bartolotti, Fabio Biondi, Asher Fisch, Raphael Frühbeck de Burgos, Martin Haselböck, Michael Güttler, Zubin Mehta, Peter Schreier and Jeffrey Tate.

The mezzo-soprano has a special love of German art song. Mostly accompanied by Helmut Deutsch, she has given song recitals at various festivals in Austria and Germany, at the “Schubertiades” in Barcelona and Vilabertran, as well as in Perth.

In December 2014 Stefanie Iranyi has represented Germany in a memorial concert to WW1 which took place in the Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow, in performance of Verdi’s Requiem with the Russian State Orchestra and chorus.

During the 2014-15 season, she is a guest with the Nuremberger Symphony in Verdi’s “Requiem”, with the Munich Bach Chorus in Bach’s “Christmas Oratorio”, with the Verdi Orchestra of Milano in Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, with the Wuppertal Symphony Orchestra with songs from Gustav Mahler’s “Knaben Wunderhorn”, with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra in an operetta evening, and with the L’Orfeo Baroque Orchestra in Bach’s “St. Matthew Passion”. A recent highlight was the role of Wellgunde in “Rheingold” by Wagner, conducted by Simon Rattle with the Sinfonieorchester des Bayrischen Rundfunks in the Herkulessaal in Munich.
